John Paul Jones is one of the lesser known band members of Led Zeppelin. Alex Reisner's Led Zeppelin Site reports: "Partly through musical boredom—the bass remained a misunderstood and thoroughly underrated instrument in those dark ages of British rock—and partly through a desire for artistic adventure, John Paul started to investigate keyboard instruments. He’s played church organ as a lad, so he already possessed the rudiments of keyboard expertise." JPJ started off with bass and organ in the first albums of Led Zeppelin (Led Zeppelin I-IV, 1969-1971). In 'Houses Of The Holy (1973), Physical Graffiti (1975) and Presence (1976), he played bass, mellotron, synthesiser, organ, piano, grand piano, synthesiser piano and synthesised bass. He was back to bass and organ in 'In through the door' (1979), and we see him playing bass and piano in 'Coda' (1982). Bass still remains one of the most difficult and least understood of all the musical instruments. And let it be that way! It's safe and better for bass guitars and bass guitarists to remain out of the reach of the multitude, who call themselves music-lovers, and quite determinedly pronounce 'bass' as 'baass'.
